Virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid-Blended Version

About this event

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) teaches adults how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth (ages 12-18).

This 6-hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents (ages 6-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  1. Common signs and symptoms of mental illness in this age group, including: Anxiety, Depression, Eating disorders, Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD),
  2. Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  3. How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis
  4. How to connect the person with help
  5. New, expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care and the impact of social media and bullying

BLENDED VIRTUAL: WHAT TO EXPECT

Prior to this virtual live instructor led session, attendees will receive information to access the Mental Health Connect Learning Platform where they will complete 2-hours of self paced learning materials which must be completed prior to participation in the live, instructor-led video workshop.

R EMEMBER: To participate in the live session, you must have all pre-work (modules 1-9) completed by 4pm CST on the THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 26th, 2024.

Live Session Requirements: To participate fully in the live session you must have a web cam and microphone and be in a space that allows you to have your camera on. You must be present for the entirety of the live session and complete the post session assignments.

Virtual Training IT Requirements:

  • Connect using Desktop, Laptop, or Tablet .
  • Chromebooks are NOT recommended due to zoom compatibility.
  • Smartphones with Zoom mobile app is NOT allowed due to limited functionality.
  • Operating systems Windows, Apple/iOS, Android.
  • Internal or external HD webcam
  • Microphone and speakers access: 1) connected to and working on desktop, laptop or tablet. 2) use the dial-in option from your phone for audio.
  • Internet connection: recommended speed of at least 5 mbps (upload and download). You can test your internet speed at https://www.speedtest.net/

Your Presenters:

Kenzie Gittings: Kenzie became a Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor in November 2022. Mental health is something Kenzie cares about deeply as she has been in the field since 2015. With YMHFA Kenzie says she is able to spread awareness, interventions to help youth in our community, as well as help in ending the stigma surrounding Mental Health. Kenzie believes that this training is an amazing starting point in helping the youth we come into contact with every day as well as those we may not know until a crisis arises. Currently, Kenzie serves as the Clinic Operations Supervisor at Tanager in Cedar Rapids Iowa.

Robin Murphy: Robin earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Human Relations from The University of Iowa in 2010 and her Master’s degree in Social Work from St. Ambrose University in 2018. Robin is fully certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. Robin has experience in helping children grow, heal and communicate through play along with helping caregivers connect with their child through family play therapy. Robin is passionate about providing support and resources to children and families in need. Robin currently holds the position as Clinical Supervisor/Therapist within the outpatient clinic.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:
Participant’s Request for Cancellation/Refund

All attendee cancellation/refund requests should be submitted by email to merakiinstitute@tanagerplace.org.

For a full refund, request must be received no later than 7 calendar days prior to workshop/event date.

Partial Refunds will be issued for requests sent less than 7 calendar days prior to workshop/event date. Partial refund is considered a refund of the registration fee minus administrative fees outlined below:

  • $25 administrative fee for a half-day workshop
  • $50 administrative fee for a full-day workshop
  • $75 administrative fee for 2-day workshop

No refund will be issued for any requests not received at least 24 hours before the event start time

Organizer’s Right to Cancel/Reschedule:

Insufficient Enrollment

Meraki Institute of Learning at Tanager Place reserves the right to cancel/postpone an event due to insufficient enrollment. Meraki Institute of Learning will make all attempts to email registered attendees 5 calendar days before event date to notify of the cancellation/postponement. Registered attendees will be provided the option to transfer enrollment to future event date or receive a full refund.

Weather, Illness, or Emergency

Meraki Institute of Learning at Tanager Place reserves the right to cancel/postpone an event due to inclement weather, instructor illness or instructor family emergency. In the event this occurs, registered attendees will receive e-mail notification before event start time. Meraki Institute of Learning at Tanager Place will send email notification to registered attendees within 10days of cancelled event to announce rescheduled event date. Attendees will be provided the option to transfer enrollment to future event or receive a full refund.
