Residential Services

Never give up hope.

When your child struggles with tough mental or behavioral health challenges, Tanager’s Inpatient Programs provide the structure, safety, and compassion they need to overcome their crisis. We give youth who may have experienced psychiatric hospitalization and other intensive treatments a chance to flip the script, so they can return home and lead happier, healthier lives. Tanager has two highly respected inpatient programs for children and teens struggling with cognitive, developmental and behavioral challenges.

Those interested in Inpatient Services and curious about eligibility requirements are encouraged to complete the Inpatient Referral Form. By providing preliminary information, we can determine if this treatment option is the best fit for the child.

Our Programs

PMIC

Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children (PMIC) programming takes place in a nurturing, home-like setting and centers around developing social, coping, and problem-solving skills. Our goal is to use trauma-informed care components to help youth reach their full potential and build positive, strong relationships so they can return home as soon as possible.

Programs are staffed by an interdisciplinary team of specialists who provide strengths-based care for every child and teen who walks through our doors. This interdisciplinary team includes child psychiatrists, nursing staff, counselors, and direct-care staff to ensure your child receives the care they need.

Treatment modalities may include collaborative problem-solving, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, expressive arts therapy, music therapy, play therapy, and recreation. These may be implemented in individual, group, or family therapy sessions.

Eligibility:
Children who have ongoing mental health challenges and safety concerns in the home and/or school setting despite ongoing outpatient services. Admission is based on medical necessity and requires prior approval by Tanager and payment providers.

ICF/ID

Intermediate Care Facility for Intellectual Disability (ICF/ID) programs offer children and adolescents with mild intellectual disabilities and behavioral challenges a safe and supportive environment. Active treatment is individually tailored to improve and/or maintain skills and foster greater self-reliance and independence.

The interdisciplinary team includes child psychiatrists, nursing staff, master’s level therapists, bachelor’s level counselors, and direct-care staff to ensure your child receives the care they need.

Children will get involved in treatment modalities such as recreation, art and music therapy, and individual, group, and family therapy/counseling according to cognitive ability and age appropriateness.

Eligibility:
Children who have mild intellectual disabilities and a mental health diagnosis. Admission requires prior approval by Tanager and payment providers.

Summit House Program
Crisis Stabilization Residential Services (CSRS)

Crisis Stabilization services are a short-term service provided in a residential setting. The goal of the CSRS is to provide a safe, secure environment in order to help youth stabilize and reintegrate back into the community.  This is a short-term voluntary placement option for youth 17 and under (average length of stay is 5 days or less).

While in the CSRS, youth will work collaboratively with Tanager’s interdisciplinary team, families, referring workers, program staff and youth to assess treatment needs, identify measurable goals, and participate in an open discussion of options, expectations, and timelines for achieving safety and stability.

Youth will get involved in treatment modalities such as recreation, art and music therapy, and individual, group, and family therapy/counseling according to cognitive ability and age appropriateness.

Eligibility:

  • Youth 17 and under.
  • All youth must be determined appropriate by trained personnel who will conduct a mental health assessment.
  • Must not be an imminent danger to self or others
  • Must not be medically compromised or require medical attention
  • Must not be experiencing symptoms that are unable to be safely managed in a community setting

Facility

Tanager PMIC is made of 2 cottages, each with 12 children. ICF/ID is made of 2 cottages, with a total of 18 children. Each cottage has a living room, a recreation room, a laundry room, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Children eat all meals in the cottage dining room. A full kitchen is available in every cottage, but most meals are made in a main kitchen and brought to the cottage at meal time. Our campus offers activity areas including a gymnasium, library, playground, baseball diamond, basketball court, gaga ball pit, track, and play area with enough room for children to play soccer, fly kites, run, and ride bikes. Cottages participate in activities in the community on a daily basis. These might include: swimming, going to the YMCA, baseball games, parks, shopping, volunteering, library visits, and bowling.

Admissions Process

1. Inquire

Contact our Admission staff. They will ask you some questions about your child’s mental health issues and current services and supports. An application packet will be sent to you through the mail or via email if it appears the child could meet criteria for inpatient programming.

2. Apply

Complete and return the application packet to the Admission Office via mail, email, or fax. Tanager will collect records from your child’s mental health providers and use that information to assess if our program is a good fit for your child. We will also determine if your child has had enough services to meet criteria for funding. The admission staff will contact you to let you know if your child has been accepted for the program.

3. Tour & Evaluations

Come check out Tanager and ask lots of questions about what life will be like for your child and family while working with our program. You will receive information about your child’s cottage and what to bring. You will meet cottage staff, and tour the living space and recreation areas. You will be given an admission packet with paperwork to be completed and returned the day of admission.

4. Expectations & Admission

Admission staff will contact you to let you know if we can serve your child. Depending on wait times, you will be mailed an admission packet with paperwork to be completed and returned the day of admission. If the wait time is significant, this step may occur closer to admission.

5. Arrive

The day of admission you will complete necessary paperwork with admission staff. You will meet with the nurse to provide an update on medical concerns and medications discussed at the D&E staffing. Your child will receive a nursing assessment. You will meet with your child’s Program Therapist to further discuss the treatment plan, set up a phone contact list, and schedule your first family therapy session. You will help your child get unpacked and settled into their bedroom.

Funding

Your child’s stay will be paid for by a combination of private insurance (if applicable) and Medicaid funds. Since private insurance will most likely not pay for the length of time we expect your child to be in our program, we must get the Medicaid funding approval for your child to be admitted. Tanager will contact Medicaid or your assigned Managed Care Organization to obtain funding for your child’s stay up to 7 days prior to admission. Private insurance will be contacted for pre-certification upon admission.

After the month of entry, the amount owed each month is based on the child’s income. This amount is called Client Participation and includes income such as Adoption Subsidies, Child Support, and SSI/SSD. Anything considered to be the child’s income will come to Tanager to offset the cost of their care.

Please contact the Admission Office at 319-365-9164, ext. 330 with questions about funding for your child.

Adoption Subsidy Income

If your child receives Adoption Subsidy Income, the subsidy amount will drop to $50 per month. Admission staff will talk with you about options for making monthly payments to Tanager, or for having the subsidy reduced to eliminate the need to write a check to Tanager  each month.

Child Support

If the child receives Child Support, you keep $50 per month. Remaining money will be owed to Tanager each month. This amount does not include back child support or support for other children.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

If the child receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Tanager Place will contact the Social Security Administration and (depending on length of stay), the child’s SSI may drop to $30.00 per month while in placement.
